Eight a.m. found me working as a receptionist/research assistant at the offices of Dr. Hugh Browns and Dr. Lorelia Links. They were therapists with offices at the fringes of downtown. They had written several books, and part of my job constituted doing contacts and research for their next books.

I had coffee ready for Hugh, who greeted me with a breezy: “Good morning. How was your weekend?”

I smiled wide. “Great!”

“Blessings be!” he said, and retreated to his office. His first patient arrived five minutes later, and I sent her in.

Lorelia arrived closer to nine, and I sent her first patient in ten minutes later. I had an extensive list of people to contact to see if they were willing to let Hugh and/or Lorelia interview them for a book on schizophrenia, but I could only think about Annie.

Funny. I’d barely thought about Elle and Alstair the past few days. I checked Annie’s Facebook page, downloaded her profile picture onto my work computer, and navigated to Alstair’s page.

ENGAGED!!! greeted me, along with pictures of Elle and Alstair kissing and Elle displaying a ring. Alstair’s status update read: “ENGAGED!!! I asked Elle to marry me last night, and she said yes! #Iamtheluckiestmanalive.”

My heart clenched into a fist as I read the message and gazed at the pictures. I may not have thought about Elle much the past few days, but memories flew at me full force. Our many mornings lounging in bed, making love, eating grapes afterward, planning a future. A wedding. Kids.

I grabbed my phone and messaged Annie: Do you know Elle Vanderburg from your church? Or Alstair Catchings?
